For the sixth time running, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) ranks within the top hundred most prestigious universities in the world. In the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine’s current World Reputation Ranking 2016, the HU reaches the group placed 51-60.

This group also includes the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Technische Universität München. The best German university, ranked in 40th position, is the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. With the Freie Universität Berlin (71-80) and the RWTH Aachen (81-90), a total of six German universities are represented in the top 100. In the international comparison, Germany thereby continues to hold third place behind the USA (43 universities) and Great Britain (10), closely followed by China and France, Japan and the Netherlands (each with 5). The most prestigious European university is the University of Cambridge (rank 4); the best continental European university continues to be the ETH Zurich (rank 19). Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University lie at the top of the ranking.

Ranking based on a survey of experienced researchers

The strategic profile partners of the HU likewise rank among the top hundred most renowned universities. Princeton University holds rank 7, the National University of Singapore comes in at rank 26 and Universidade de São Paulo is represented in the group 91-100.

The World Reputation Ranking is an offshoot of the annual THE World University Ranking. It is based on a survey of experienced researchers. This year, over 10,000 researchers from 133 countries between January and March 2016 were surveyed on excellence in research and teaching in their disciplines as well as in institutions of which they are familiar. According to THE, the ranking is a result of the number of mentions of the individual universities as the best in their field.
