Julia von Blumenthal and Joybrato Mukherjee want to become president of the Humboldt-Universität
Prof. Dr Julia von Blumenthal and Prof. Dr Joybrato Mukherjee will stand for election as President of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin on 15th February. The Academic Council of the Humboldt-Universität will hear the candidates on 8th February and make their choice on 15th February.
Julia von Blumenthal has been President of the Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) since October 2018. Previously, she was Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Humboldt-Universität and a professor at the Department of Social Sciences in the division for German Domestic Politics.
Joybrato Mukherjee has been President of the University of Gießen since 2009. The professor of English linguistics had been a member of the university’s Executive Board as First Vice-President since the beginning of 2008, and was responsible for Learning and Teaching. In addition, he has been President of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) since early 2020, having been its Vice-President since 2012.
Outstanding Academic Managers
"With Julia von Blumenthal and Joybrato Mukherjee, the Humboldt-Universität’s Board of Governors has proposed two outstanding academic managers to the Academic Council for election," says the Chair of the Board of Governors, Edelgard Bulmahn. "Both are ideally suited to steer the Humboldt-Universität through the upcoming challenges in the years ahead."

The call for applications for the office of president was published in November 2021. A selection committee set up by the Board of Governors picked a list of candidates. On 21st January 2022, the Board of Governors nominated Julia von Blumenthal and Joybrato Mukherjee to the Academic Council for election.
The hearing for the candidates will take place on 8th February at 9 a.m. by way of video conference. The dial-in details are available on written request from the Governing Bodies’ Office. The election on 15th February at 9 a.m. is planned as an in-person event in the Audimax II on the Humboldt Universität’s Campus Nord and will be broadcast to the public via live stream.
