The events at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin that are part of Berlin Science Week 2019:
November 1, 2019 Next Frontier Debate ‘Collecting and Archiving – A Task of the University?’
6 to 8 pm
Once again, the core element this year of the HU Programme is the ‘Next Frontier Debate’. On this panel HU researchers talk with other scientists about questions and perspectives regarding research on a socially relevant topic. To start the week, HU invites anyone interested to the ‘Next Frontier Debate’ on the topic of ‘Collecting and Archiving – A Task of the University?’. Scientists offer a look into the world of scientific collections at universities and outline the current issues and challenges.
November 4, 2019 Humboldt meets School
9 am - 3.30 pm
The ‘Schüler*innen-Gesellschaften’ and ‘Club Lise’ of Humboldt-Universität will introduce themselves for the first time at Science Week @ HU. In exciting workshops, students (grades 9-13) will get a look at scientific work at the university and learn what the differences are between university and school. Anyone who still goes to school, but is ready to take on Ovid’s Metamorphoses and the manipulation of images in the media or would like use mathematics to create order out of chaos has come to the right place. In addition, students can register exclusively for further offerings held at Humboldt-Universität throughout the entire year.
November 6, 2019 UniLab Adlershof ‘How small is e really?’
9 am - 2 pm
This programme features two half-day scientific student laboratory projects at UniLab on Campus Adlershof. In the module ‘How small is e really’, upper-level students (grades 11–13) can determine the value of the elementary charge through different physical and chemical paths. A historical reference is intended show physical learning and work methods and also serve as a central theme. Students will work independently in small groups and determine the value of the elementary charge in one of the following experiments: electrolysis (chemical determination), teltron tube (physical determination by means of deflection in a magnetic field), oil drop experiment (physical determination by means of descent-ascent or suspension methods in an electric field). The second module ‘Quantisation of Energy’ takes place on November 8, 2019 (see below).
November 6, 2019 ‘Basic Right or Responsibility – Is the Freedom of Science in Danger?’
6 – 8 pm
The opening event of a new series at Humboldt-Universität will focus on the topic of the freedom of science. This event will take place in the auditorium of the Grimm Zentrum on November 6, 2019. Researchers of Humboldt-Universität and other institutions will discuss with the public the question ‘Basic Right or Responsibility? Is the Freedom of Science in Germany in Danger?’.
November 6 - 9, 2019 Dance Performance „A.E. – Anatomie.Evolution.Anfang.Ende“
From November 6 to 9, 2019, the Tieranatomisches Theater presents the dance performance ‘A.E. – Anatomie.Evolution.Anfang.Ende’ by artist Mariola Groener and dancer Günther Wilhelm, who have worked together under the label WILHELM GROENER since 2001. ‘A.E.’ premieres on November 6, 2019 as part of Berlin Science Week at TA T. Before the backdrop of how evolutionary processes and advancing (bio)technological possibilities alter us, this dance performance reflects on humans in a fluid state of becoming.
November 7, 2019 BSE Lecture with Nobel Laureate Alvin Roth on the issue of ‘Controversial Markets’
2.30 – 4 pm
With great anticipation Humboldt-Universität welcomes a high-ranking guest. Economist and Nobel Laureate Alvin E. Roth (Stanford University) will speak at Humboldt Universität on November 7 2019 about how the prohibition on organ and tissue trafficking influences the treatment of kidney disease and the organization of kidney transplants worldwide.
The event will be held in English.
November 7, 2019 Humboldt-Stipendium Lecture ‘Future of Work’
6 – 8 pm
Smart work, hard work, no work? The panellists shine a light on different aspects of the future of work. New technologies, demographic change and globalisation give room to a new understanding of flexible work when it comes to where, how and when. Artificial intelligence is getting more integrated into our work environment, the flow of information is picking up pace and people are sprinting along. What does the future hold?
November 8, 2019 UniLab Adlershof Unilab Adlershof ‘Quantisation of Energy’
9 am – 2 pm
This programme features two half-day scientific student laboratory projects at UniLab on Campus Adlershof. The second module ‘Quantification of Energy’ on November 8 2019 deals with the connection between experiments on the quantisation of energy from different epochs of scientific research. In small groups, students will work out how atoms emit and absorb particular wavelengths and then establish a connection between energy and wavelengths.
November 9 - 30, 2019 Exhibition ‘The Wall. It’s up again!’
9 am – 5 pm
Thirty years after the opening of the Wall in the fall 1989, the German Archive of the Federal Agency for Civic Education (BpB) presents “The Wall. It’s up again!’ at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. This exhibition commemorates the Berlin Wall, which divided up the city and separated the people in the East from the people in the West for 28 years. The vernissage is at 6 pm on November 8, 2019 in Lichthof Ost, Hauptgebäude, Under den Linden 6. The exhibition will run from November 9 to 30, 2019.
November 11, 2019 Adlershof Research Forum 2019
10 am - 4 pm
The Adlershof Research Forum on November 11, 2019 marks the conclusion of Science Week at HU. In addition to lectures by renowned scientists and business representatives of WISTA Science and Technology Park in Adlerhof, winners of the ‘Falling Walls Lab Adlershof’ will give short presentations. Graduate students and postdocs from Adlershof will present their research in an accompanying poster show.
