Summer Party
The Humboldt-Universität will be opening its doors for its summer party from noon to 10 p.m. on 29 August 2019 and invites you to go on a journey of discovery through its buildings, collections and courtyards. With an extensive programme of events and activities to do with Alexander von Humboldt in the main building and the Grimm Centre, the university’s summer party has something for everyone.

Sugar is so ubiquitous that we hardly ever give it a thought. Guests will be able to investigate the sweet stuff in a big educational meal with academics, scientists and educationalists from the HU and shed light on it from the point of view of ecology, biology, economics, agricultural science and cultural studies while cooking and eating together.

School students and teachers present their projects for the Humboldt Year
Instead of brooding over their books, school students are networking for 'Going Green’ with partner schools and experts in Germany and the USA to carry out local projects on global environmental topics. By means of research-oriented learning across the Atlantic, participants develop common strategies and innovative local projects for combating the effects of climate change.
The culmination of the project will be a creative competition among the participating courses around excellent, sustainable project approaches. The guiding spirit and patron of Going Green 2019 is Alexander von Humboldt. Since 2012 there has been a unique co-operation behind the project ‘Going Green – Education for Sustainability’ involving academia (Leuphana University Lüneburg), politics/culture (U.S. Embassy and Consulates), educational bodies (LIFE e.V./eXplorarium) and local teachers and practice partners in Germany and the USA.

Humboldt-Universität is opening its archives, collections and offices and offering guided tours of places and objects that are otherwise not accessible to the public. Whether you take this unique opportunity to see the original of Humboldt’s famous Chimborazo map, to have a peek into the president’s office, take a tour of the collections or look at the university’s architecture, a day full of new impressions awaits you.

Rüdiger Schaper and Frank Holl have both written biographies of Alexander von Humboldt. In many respects they agree, but on some points their positions are far apart. For the summer party they have promised to take up every controversy to do with Alexander von Humboldt that they can get their hands on – from his role in colonialism to his relationship with women.

The KOSMOS Conference, from 28 to 30 August 2019, will be discussing some of the greatest challenges facing sustainable development at the moment. Starting point will be the critical discussion of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which the world community intends to achieve by 2030. This requires research that is interdisciplinary in principle, combining social sciences, economics, political science, and, in the widest sense, cultural and humanities expertise, especially philosophy, with natural science and geoscience. It also has to include recent technological advances such as digitalisation, data science and Artificial Intelligence. On Friday afternoon the expert conference will meet all those who are interested in seeking a course through the stormy 21st Century together. A big public debate will conclude the conference in the evening.
