Teacher training at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
In the State of Berlin, the study programme that leads to a professional teaching qualification is divided into consecutive courses.
- The first part is a three-year combined bachelor’s course. At the end of this students are awarded the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree.
- This is followed by a Teacher Training master’s course that takes three or four semesters, depending on the area of teaching you intend to go into (Attention: we expect that the standard time for completing course will be standardised at four semesters). The degree awarded is a Master of Education.
- The Master of Education is considered equivalent to the German teacher training qualification First State Examination for the Teaching Profession, which enables candidates to start their Induction Service as trainee teachers (Referendariat). The Induction Service ends with the Second State Examination, the final stage of teacher training in Germany. Upon passing this final examination, teachers can teach at state schools or private schools.
The programme has a modular structure. Credit points (CP) are awarded in compliance with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Exams are taken as part of the teaching/learning process. University exams replace the traditional German qualification path, the First State Examination.
