Coalition for Reforming Research Assessment (CoARA)
What is CoARA?
The idea of CoARA is to reform the evaluation of the performance of various actors within the science system and to take greater account of qualitative factors, for example.
The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin joined CoARA on 14 March 2024 and supports the further development of research assessment. Link press release
The four core CoARA commitments
-
Recognise diversity of research dimensions and careers in research assessment
-
Evaluation should be based on qualitative judgement
-
Avoid inappropriate use of metrics in research assessment
-
Avoid rankings of research institutions in research assessment
-
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin can already draw on a great deal of good practice in this area.
Network
In the Berlin research area, the Berlin University Alliance (BUA), die Technische Universität Berlin, the Charité - Universtitätsmedizin Berlin and the University of Potsdam have also signed CoARA (further signatories).
Humboldt-Universität is also part of the ‘National Chapter’, which networks CoARA stakeholders throughout Germany and is coordinated by the DFG: Link
CoARA action-plans
The signatories of CoARA draw up action plans that set out the measures planned to reform research assessment over the next five years. Some of the plans are ‘living documents’ and are published on Zenodo: Link
