Project overview

Liberal democracies are currently being called into question from various sides: Right-wing populist movements are gaining strength and authoritarian rulers, for example in China and Russia, as well as non-state actors, such as the Islamic State, are positioning themselves against liberalism and democracy. In the Cluster of Excellence "Contestation of the Liberal Script" (SCRIPTS), researchers are investigating the effects of attacks on the "liberal script", which is based on freedom, equality, justice and tolerance, in the context of the global problems of the 21st century. To this end, they analyse the disputes surrounding liberal ways of organizing societies from a comparative, historical and global perspective and work out the causes of the current crisis.

SCRIPTS is a Cluster of Excellence at Freie Universität Berlin.

Partners are the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), the Hertie School, the Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS), the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), the Berlin branch of the Leibniz German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO).
