Programme structure and combinations
Classical Archaeology is offered as:
• Core subject: 120 CP*, with a second subject to be selected
• Second subject: 60 CP, with a bachelor’s core subject without teacher training option
* One credit point (CP) is calculated to equal a workload of 25 to max. 30 hours for preparation, follow-up and attendance at teaching sessions.
Language skills
Students with no knowledge of Latin are strongly recommended to acquire this within the General elective modules.
Why study Classical archaeology at HU?
Classical archaeology is a historical cultural science which explores the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome (as well as their reception and transformation up to the present day). It focuses on the relics of material traditions (cities, buildings, objects), which are analysed and interpreted as historical traces for the reconstruction of the life of ancient societies and their people.
The Winckelmann Institute at the HU offers its students a diverse range of courses, which is intended to meet both the spectrum of the subject and the career prospects of the graduates.
The subject can be realised with different focuses and talents - as a science of archaeological excavation and documentation, of cultural-historical interpretation and reconstruction, as well as of public presentation and discussion.
The aim of the programme is thus to test one's own interests, to deepen one's skills and to develop new competencies under the supervision of the lecturers. Accordingly, the Winckelmann Institute realises its archaeological teaching on a broad spectrum, which combines both scientific and practical approaches. Students can also collaborate on current research projects, participate in field campaigns, write scientific texts, realise exhibitions, or create 3D models/Virtual Reality applications.
In this way, we open a wide range of perspectives and opportunities for all our students to apply what they have learned at the HU in their future careers. The acquired skills enable students to work in a wide range of professional activities within and outside the academic field, e.g. in research, museums, the media, publishing, cultural management, politics and economics or adult education.

What skills and interests do you need?
- Fun in the exploration of foreign, past cultures and their material traditions,
- interest in the history of ancient Greece and Rome,
- enjoyment of encountering archaeological excavation sites and ancient buildings and objects,
- curiosity in the critical analysis and creative discussion of scientific observations and theses, methods, and theories,
- desire to travel in the Mediterranean countries and participate in archaeological field campaigns and archaeological research projects,
- readiness to read and deal with archaeological evidence intensively,
- motivation to do research and practice-oriented work.
