Required language skills for undergraduate degree programmes
All undergraduate degree programmes at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin are offered exclusively in German. To apply, you therefore need to have C1 German language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. You have to prove that you have the required C1 proficiency level with an appropriate certificate (final examination). Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin accepts all common certificates for applications:
- Goethe-Zertifikat C1
- telc C1
- telc C1 Hochschule
- DSH-1
- TestDaF with a score of at least 3 in all sections in order to be able to take the DSH exam in the event of admission.
Certificates of attendance of a German course will not be accepted.
If you have submitted German C1 language proficiency as part of your application and have been admitted to the degree programme, your proficiency will be tested as part of the "German Language Test for Admission to Higher Education" (DSH) before enrolment and the start of your studies. You will be invited to take this test by the university.
Exemption from the DSH exam is possible if you can provide proof of an equivalent such as the TestDaF with a score of at least 4 in all sections or the "telc C1 Hochschule" exam passed with "very good" or "good", passing the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 exam, DSH-2 from another German university, etc., and the certificate is not older than 3 years.
