Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Joint preparatory college (Studienkolleg)

Requirements for the joint preparatory college (Studienkolleg) with Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin)

The preparatory college is a one-year school-based preparatory course for obtaining a university entrance qualification and is held jointly with Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin). The courses take place at the FU Berlin.

The preparatory college is divided into specialisation courses:

  • M course (for medical and biological subjects)
  • G course (for humanities and language subjects)
  • W course (for economics subjects)
  • T course (for technical and scientific subjects, except biology)

I. Application

Application to the joint preparatory college is only possible for the winter semester. The application period is from 01 June to 15 July (cut-off deadline).

The application process is the same as for a degree programme. Enter the desired course of study when selecting your degree programme on the uni-assist portal.

After submitting your application via uni-assist, if you meet all the formal requirements, you will be invited to take the study aptitude test ("Studierfähigkeitstest") in Berlin, which usually takes place in August. Admission to the preparatory college is only granted on the basis of the result of the aptitude test.

All-day lessons take place on five weekdays in the subjects of a specialisation course suitable for the desired course of study, and are held in German.

Lesson times are based on the school curriculum of the state of Berlin, not on the lecture times of the universities.

II. Prerequisites

You must meet certain conditions to participate in the preparatory college:

  • Your formal education is not yet sufficient to start a degree programme directly
  • Your previous education must entitle you to participate in the preparatory college; information about the recognition of foreign previous education can be found in the anabin database. You can also perform a self-check for your university entrance qualification on the uni-assist website.
  • You must provide proof of German language skills at level B2 (B2 CEFR exam passed, TestDaF at least level 3 in each partial exam, successful participation in C1 course)
  • For the W course: Additional B1 English certificate for application

III. Assessment test (FSP/Feststellungsprüfung)

The preparatory college ends in an assessment test.

  • This one-year course, together with the final FSP, means that your previous education constitutes subject-specific qualification for admission to a specialised course of study that corresponds to the specialisation course of the FSP.
  • Subject-specific means that you can only study the subjects that belong to the subject group of your assessment test (FSP).
  • Your subject-specific university entrance qualification remains a foreign university entrance qualification.
  • The assessment test is not a general German university entrance qualification.
  • You are enrolled as a student at the university during this time

IV. External assessment test

It is also possible to take the assessment test externally at the preparatory college after self-organised preparation. However, the number of examination places is limited for capacity reasons. If you have any questions about the external assessment test, please contact FU Berlin directly.
