Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Admission Requirements

Admission to courses of study is principally based on two factors:

  1. Citizenship and/or higher education qualifications;
  2. Numerical restrictions on admission to a particular course, i.e. "NC = numerus clausus", at Humboldt-Universität or at all German universities.
1. Citizenship and higher education qualifications
Foreign citizens wishing to study for a full academic degree or intending to pursue part of their studies at Humboldt- Universität without being involved in any formal Exchange Programme are required to submit a formal application to the Student Administration Office. Those participating in an Exchange Programme must apply directly to the International Office of Humboldt-Universität

.

International applicants holding a German secondary school leaving certificate (Abitur) (referred to as "Bildungsinländer") and EU citizens

are dealt with on an equal footing with German citizens with regard to admission to courses.

Persons having long-standing work experience but without formal higher education qualifications (Abitur or comparable level) can be admitted under § 11 of Berliner Hochschulgesetz (Berlin Higher Education Act).
Restrictions on admission (Numerus clausus - NC)
As there may be restrictions on admission, German or international applicants holding a German secondary school leaving certificate (Abitur) and EU citizens

who wish to embark on a course are required to take one of the following three routes when submitting an application for a course:

NC at all German universities ==> Applications to be submitted to uni-assist
NC at Humboldt-Universität ==> Applications to be submitted directly to Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
no restrictions on admission ==> Direct registration at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

There are special regulations for doctoral studies.
