How the admission process works

How the admission process for undergraduate degree programmes works

After uni-assist has checked that all documents required for further processing at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin have been submitted, you will be notified by uni-assist and your data will be forwarded to the Admissions Office for International Students at our university.

This uni-assist information is accepted by German embassies and German consular missions as confirmation of application. Please endeavour to make an appointment to apply for a visa in good time in advance.

If your submitted application documents do not meet the application requirements specified by our university, you will likewise be notified. You can make corrections or submit missing documents up to the application deadline (cut-off deadline) or reapply for a degree programme at our university at the next application opportunity.

The application documents are stored digitally for three application periods.

1. Registration on the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin online portal (status enquiry)

In order to enable you to track the status of further processing of your application, you will receive an e-mail from our university following successful receipt of the application data from uni-assist containing further information about how you can follow the decision-making process at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. From this point on, please check your e-mails regularly, including your spam folder.

The status request shows you the processing status of your application at Humboldt-Universität. If changes are made to your application by our employees, you will receive an e-mail at regular intervals, which does not necessarily indicate a change in your status request. Most of the time, your application will show the processing status: "Application is being processed/checked" or "Waiting for admission process". You therefore do not need to contact us individually to enquire about the processing status. Your application will not be forgotten under any circumstances, and the result of the selection process will be shown on your status request.

2. Admission process

At Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin there are subjects with restricted admission (NC) and subjects without restricted admission (NC-free). NC stands for Numerus Clausus, which means that only a limited number of study places are available for these degree programmes. Study places are allocated through a selection process according to defined criteria. The selection process is initially based on citizenship.

  • EU or EEA citizenship

The same criteria and the same selection process apply as for German applicants.

  • No EU or EEA citizenship

For this group of applicants, there is a fixed quota of 5% of the total number of study places in the first semester of undergraduate degree programmes (Bachelor's degree and State examinations). Study places are allocated exclusively on the basis of the average grade of the university entrance qualification.

We carry out the admission process for undergraduate subjects with restricted admission for the first semester at the beginning/middle of August, and for undergraduate subjects for higher semesters from the beginning/middle of September.

If you meet the formal admission requirements for undergraduate subjects without restricted admission for the first semester, you will receive admission to the degree programme from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin immediately after submitting your application documents.

You will be informed by e-mail as soon as the admission process is completed. The result of the admission process can be viewed in your status query. We will provide you with the corresponding admission or rejection notice online.

If you are admitted, you must declare your acceptance of the study place online within the set deadline (cut-off period). If you miss this deadline, your study place will be forfeited.

Only after you have accepted the study place online, you will be shown the documents that you need to submit for enrolment. From this point on, we will also invite you to take the DSH exam, if you still need to take it before starting your degree programme.
