Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 1/3: Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum

To celebrate Humboldt-Universität’s 200th birthday in 2010, the Central Library and part of the Computer and Media Service gained a brand-new, ultra-modern building – the Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum.

Incorporating twelve branch libraries and sub-libraries in the fields of humanities, cultural studies, social sciences and economic sciences, it covers seven floors. With 2.5 million books, electronic media and a coordinated structure of advisory and service facilities, it is one of the largest open-access library collections in Germany.

The heart of the library is the open reading terraces with unobstructed views of the Berlin sky. In addition to a solid collection of current research literature, the university’s historical special collections – including the private library of the eponymous brothers Grimm – can now also be accessed in the Grimm-Zentrum for the very first time.

The ‘Berliner Volksbank’ nursery also offers freedom to student and academic staff parents. They can read and work here while their children play or read to themselves.

The Grimm-Zentrum is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to midnight and on weekends and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. – unusual for Berlin.
