Pioneering project "QuantumCardiology-AI" starts at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Quantum sensor technology and artificial intelligence for a new era of cardiac diagnostics

Under the direction of Prof Dr Niels Wessel, the QuantumCardiology-AI project, which combines artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum sensor technology for cardiac diagnostics, will be launched in November 2025 at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) and MSB Medical School Berlin. The aim is to use state-of-the-art AI methods such as deep learning to recognise subtle patterns in the heart's magnetic field - and thus diagnose heart disease earlier and more precisely.

Prof Wessel's Cardiovascular Physics working group has been an international leader in the analysis of cardiovascular signals for over 20 years. Their research is based on thousands of highly sensitive magnetocardiography data sets collected in everyday clinical practice. "We know what diagnostic potential lies in the finest modulations of the heart's magnetic field," says Prof Wessel, "With AI, we can make this information usable on a large scale for the first time." Initial results show that this method can be used to recognise early signs of cardiovascular disease non-invasively and almost in real time.

"QuantumCardiology-AI" is one of the first projects of its scale outside of China and fits seamlessly into the German government's recently adopted High-Tech Agenda Germany 2025, which emphasises quantum sensor technology and AI in medicine as key technologies.

The project invites partners from clinics, industry and research to actively work together on transferring this data into clinical practice - for more precise and patient-centred cardiac medicine.
