Habilitation

In German-speaking countries, the habilitation is regarded as the classic route to a professorship. It proves that a subject can be represented independently in research and teaching. Successful habilitation candidates receive a teaching qualification. No academic degree is awarded in Berlin.

Does a habilitation suit me?

The habilitation is a clear step into an academic career - but the prospects are limited. Permanent professorships are rare, and without excellent qualifications, strong networks and geographical flexibility it will be difficult. If you can say with certainty that you would change your place of residence if necessary and that you enjoy networking in order to increase your career opportunities, then you are on the right track.

This is how your habilitation procedure works:

  1. Submit an application: Submit your application in writing to the Dean's Office - stating your subject and topic.
  2. Review: The faculty will review your documents to ensure that they fulfil all requirements.
  3. Procedure: You will go through three steps: Assessment of the habilitation thesis, teaching test, oral examination
  4. Success: Do you pass everything? Then you will receive the teaching qualification

Requirements, authorisation and application

The faculties are responsible for habilitations. Each has its own habilitation regulations. Please check the websites of the faculties or institutes directly.
