Deferral of an offer of authorisation

Anyone who receives admission to a study place at the beginning of or during their service and is unable to take up the admission offered for the time being due to the completion of their service is entitled to re-admission to the study place received at that time on the basis of the earlier admission.

In order to realise your entitlement to preferential admission, you must reapply for the identical degree programme in due form and time after the end of your service. Before doing so, you must declare the withdrawal of your study place or apply for a deferral.

The following groups of persons can declare a provision

Deferral is possible if you can prove that you are performing or have performed one of the following services in accordance with Section 10 of the Berlin University Admission Regulations (BerlHZVO):

  • Compulsory service or voluntary service (§ 7 BerlHZG, para. 1 no. 1 and no. 2)
  • Development service (§ 7 BerlHZG, Para. 1 No. 3),
  • Federal Volunteer Service (§ 7 BerlHZG, Para. 1 No. 4)
  • Youth Volunteer Service (§ 7 BerlHZG, Para. 1 No. 5),
  • Care or nursing of a child under the age of 18 or a person in need of care from the circle of other relatives for a period of up to 3 years (§ 7 BerlHZG, para. 1 no. 6).

How to declare a provision

In the event of admission and acceptance of the study place in due time, you can apply for deferral

  • either - if the application for the degree programme is made via the Foundation for University Admissions - directly to Hochschulstart by the end of the enrolment period. You can find the deferral notice in your account on hochschulstart.de. Please download the notification as you will need it to apply for a place on the degree programme at a later date. It must be submitted with your new application to Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin together with the certificate of completed service.
  • Alternatively, you must declare your deferment in the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin online application portal. Proceed as follows: Firstly, accept the study place offered online by the deadline and then download the letter of admission. Secondly, declare the cancellation of your application. You can apply for preferential admission when you reapply for a study place. As proof of your entitlement, submit the letter of admission and a certificate of completed service.

Notes on the provision

Please note the following basic information on deferral:

  • In order to assert your claim, you must apply for a study place again in due form and time.
  • The deferral is valid for up to a maximum of two award procedures after the end of your service in which the degree programme in which you were admitted is offered.
  • If you do not commence your service, the deferral will lapse.
  • An admission can lose its validity if it was incorrectly stated and it turns out during enrolment that no service within the meaning of § 10 BerlHZVO was completed.

Frequently asked questions

Your basic entitlement to preferential admission is limited in time. The entitlement expires after two award procedures following the end of service/supervision. If you submit a special application for preferential admission after this time, you will take part in the "regular" application and admission procedure.

Not only can you apply, you should definitely do so, as this may enable you to secure admission after your service. If you receive an admission and are unable to accept it due to your service, please accept the offered study place within the deadline and then print out your letter of admission, as you will need copies of the letter for a later (allocation) procedure.

You would then have to reapply in good time for the next or at the latest the second possible allocation procedure after the end of your service and submit the special application for "preferential admission" on the basis of a service. You should then attach the previous letter of admission (a copy is sufficient) and a certificate of service (as proof of service) to the hard copy of this new application and send the documents within the application deadline. Please note that you are only entitled to preferential admission if you have submitted the complete documents. Furthermore, you are only entitled to preferential admission for the subject in which you were previously admitted and only for the next two admission procedures after the end of your service.

Please inform yourself about the possibilities and conditions of the application for deferral directly on the website of the Foundation for University Admissions.
