Industrial mechanic

Industrial mechanics are real "all-rounders". They are employed in the manufacture, maintenance and monitoring of technical systems. Typical areas of application are maintenance, mechanical and plant engineering, production technology and precision engineering.

About the profession

The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin provides training in the field of precision engineering, taking into account the special features of the university's teaching and research activities. The training is very multi-faceted and opens up a wide range of fields of activity within the metal industry: optical device construction, maintenance, prototyping, assembly, individual and series production, service, research and development.

Prerequisites

At least an advanced vocational qualification or lower secondary school leaving certificate (MSA) or equivalent level of education is required for employment. You should also have good working and social behaviour, a good grasp of things, a sense of responsibility, physical agility and a sound knowledge of mathematics and physics. If you enjoy manual work, have perhaps already completed an internship in this field, like to repair your bike or similar or build models, then you have come to the right place.

What trainees say

Training at Humboldt-Universität combines in-depth knowledge with practical experience - a place where learning really takes on meaning.

Apprentice

I like my apprenticeship as an industrial mechanic because I enjoy practical work and learn something new every day. I find it exciting to assemble and maintain machines and systems and to rectify faults independently. I particularly appreciate the fact that I can use both technical understanding and manual skills in my job.

Our trainees have good learning conditions in the training workshop for the first 18 months. They have small working groups of 4 trainees. We offer insights into development and research on the Adlershof campus. We have a varied training programme and create real products of high value.

Practical training

The practical training teaches the following skills:

  • Manual and mechanical production of workpieces and components from various metallic and non-metallic materials
  • Operating and setting up machine tools
  • Programming machine tools
  • Assembling and disassembling components, assemblies and systems as well as maintaining equipment
  • Installing, expanding and testing pneumatic and electro-pneumatic control technology components
  • Operational and technical communication
  • Independent planning and organisation of work
  • Quality assurance, occupational safety and customer orientation

The work in particular is characterised by precision and finesse.

The training takes place in a spacious training building (training workshop) in Berlin-Adlershof, in institutes of the Humboldt University and in companies in Berlin-Adlershof (WISTA).

Theory

  • The theoretical training takes place at the OSZ "Georg Schlesinger-Schule" in Berlin in block lessons.
  • Extended final examination: Part 1 of the final examination takes place after 18 months and is weighted at 40 per cent. Part 2 of the final examination is taken at the end of the training period and relates to the skills and knowledge taught during the entire training period as well as the vocational school lessons.
