Architectural draughtsman with focus on architecture

Draughtsmen convert the specifications of architects, structural engineers and engineers into construction drawings and assist in the preparation of construction processes. They create and manage standardised drawings and plans for the construction sector based on design sketches and specifications from architects and civil engineers. In this way, they create the basis for a smooth approval process and flawless construction work.

Application deadline

This training will not be offered again until 2027. We will be accepting applications for this from 01/09/2026.

About the profession

In the architecture specialisation, including interior design, structural engineers create floor plans, sections and views of buildings and rooms, for example. They draw execution plans. For computer-aided drawings, they operate CAD systems (CAD = computer-aided design), which consist of a computer, screen, mouse and keyboard. They use the associated software, save data and operate connected additional devices such as scanners, printers and data transfer devices. Civil engineers also create drawings on drawing boards or drawing machines and can also use ink pens, drawing paper, rulers, compasses, scales and protractors.

Prerequisites

You must have successfully completed lower secondary school or have an equivalent level of education and have good mathematical and spatial skills. It makes sense to enjoy working with computers and drawing. The construction internship is part of the training programme and requires good physical fitness.

What trainees say

The new trainees can look forward to a very varied training programme and should be open to new things. (...) The HU has a lot of cool old buildings, such as the main building on Unter den Linden. That's quite interesting to see.

Training content

Theory

Training-related lessons (part-time or block teaching) at the vocational school

Vocational subjects:

  • Technology, technical maths
  • Technical drawing, CAD computer science

General education subjects:

  • German, economics and social studies, English
  • Sports

Practical training

In the 1st year of training you will learn, for example

  • the basics of technical drawing, e.g. visualising surfaces with straight and regularly curved boundaries

  • Construction drawing standards, guidelines, technical rules, construction drawing types and symbols

  • Fundamentals of construction skills, in particular setting up and operating construction sites, securing construction sites

  • the use of different building materials, for example wood, stone, slabs, lime, plaster.

During the first year of training, you will complete a 12-week work placement at a building yard.

The following is taught in the 2nd year of training:

  • what is important when surveying and measuring terrain and building components

  • how different types of projection are used

  • what needs to be taken into account when determining quantities, masses and dead loads of building materials and components

  • how information and electronic data processing are used in a sector-specific manner

During the specialised vocational training, you will learn about the course of construction projects through site inspections with a site manager to supplement the skills and knowledge described in the general training plan.

In the 3rd year of training, you will deepen the following knowledge (specialising in building construction including space-creating finishing), for example:

  • Drawing floor plans, sections and views in different scales according to design sketches
