Part-Time Study

Project Aims and Approach

Due to the growing significance of life-long learning, nowadays many students face the challenge of combining their studies with multiple additional commitments, be that through work, care obligations in the family, health issues or a combination of all three. Against this background, the project Part-Time Study developed practical solutions making it easier to combine studying at Humboldt-Universität with everyday professional and family life. The project responded to students individual circumstances, regardless of their official status, giving them a realistic chance of successfully completing their studies in spite of multiple burdens.

The main aims of the project were:

  • To set up support-networks for students with multiple commitments
  • To create opportunities for a more flexible combination of class-based study, independent learning and online study
  • To ensure that programme requirements are adapted to part-time study mode

What we offered for students:

  • Individual advice on combining studies with professional and family commitments
  • Support in creating personal schedules and study plans
  • A range of additional classes facilitated through part-time visiting lecturers
  • Additional demand-based tutorials (“Begleitendes Lernen”) to provide learning support during the introductory phase
  • The development of a range of digital study resources to facilitate flexible learning and independent study
