Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 8

What Alexander von Humboldt’s world-encompassing opus magnum ‘Kosmos’ is to the world of science, Gustav Mahler’s 8th Symphony is to music. With a length of an hour and a half, it is one of the longest symphonies ever composed, a work in which, as Mahler put it, “the universe begins to gain a voice and to resound”.

Four ensembles of Humboldt-Universität performed the “Symphony of a Thousand” under the leadership of University Musical Director Constantin Alex, to celebrate 25 years of music at Humboldt-Universität.
