Course structure and content

The bachelor’s minor field of study Media Studies provides scientific expertise in the independent handling of media, in particular with regard to the increasing networking of art, culture and music. It is a relevant, contemporary supplement to all major fields of study offered at Humboldt-Universität. The subject enables students to acquire media-studies-related basic skills and apply them to the knowledge they acquire in their major field of study.
The scientific skills gained from the programme include the systematic, historical, analytical and technical/practical capabilities indispensable for concept-oriented and knowledge-oriented careers in the culture and media sectors.

Special features

The core of the programme is the critical analysis of historical and contemporary texts in media studies.

In addition, the department offers application-oriented study formats: practical exercises in operating and building technical equipment, programming, science journalism, media art, and performance. For this purpose, laboratories are available: the signal lab, the media archaeology collection, the media library, a studio for digital audiovisual media with a recording booth, a studio for analog audiovisual media, the media theater, and the campus radio station. Further information can be found on the institute's website.

It is also possible to complete modules and module components abroad.

As with any theoretical degree programme, a passion for extensive reading is essential, as is an interest in philosophical questions and historical perspectives. However, the core motivation—unlike purely humanities and intellectual history disciplines—is a love of media as concrete, technical things, which is why this degree programme familiarizes students with both hardware and software, "analog" and "digital." Since media studies is not a vocational degree programme, it is particularly important for students to think in a structured yet creative way, to be flexible, and to be able to network effectively.
