DFG explanatory video on the use of AI in peer review now available

The DFG has published a explanatory video on YouTube explaining how AI may be used in the context of peer review.

The three-and-a-half-minute explanatory video provides a detailed explanation of the key principles of confidentiality, transparency, quality assurance and accountability.

The DFG’s new guidelines on the use of AI in peer review came into force on 16 April 2026. Anyone using the DFG elan portal must actively consent, on a one-off basis, to the guidelines and other legal framework conditions when artificial intelligence (AI) is used in the DFG’s peer review and decision-making processes. In addition, users must give their one-off consent to the granting of corresponding rights of use to application content. Reviewers are also obliged to state in the elan portal whether they have used an AI system in the preparation of their review.
