What do life and career trajectories of at-risk researchers and artists look like? What strategies can be developed to protect academic freedom at regional and international levels? The Berlin-Brandenburg Academic Freedom Week addresses these questions through a diverse programme of events. Organised by the Scholars at Risk Section Berlin-Brandenburg, the Berlin University Alliance and partner institutions, it brings together regional and international actors from academia, culture and civil society in Berlin and Brandenburg.
In this context, Humboldt-Universität invites you to three events:
- On 18 May, 4pm – 6pm: Opening and guided tour of the exhibition “Standing for Freedom: Portraits of Scientists in Exile” in the presence of its creators, Pascale Laborier and Pierre-Jérôme Adjedj
- On 20 May, 1pm – 5pm: “Centre Marc Bloch Roundtables: Transnational Perspectives on Academic Freedom”, featuring a keynote by Stephanie Balme (Sciences Po Paris) and two panel discussions with researchers on international examples of at-risk academic spaces and on European research structures' scope of action
- On 20 May, 5:30pm – 8pm: “Academic Freedom at Risk: European Universities between Resilience and Responsibility”, with the presidents of Humboldt-Universität, Universität der Künste and Campus Condorcet in Paris, and opening remarks by the French Ambassador to Germany, François Delattre
These events are made possible thanks to the support of the French Embassy in Germany, the Berlin University Alliance, the Institut Français Deutschland, and the Philipp Schwartz Initiative.
The Berlin-Brandenburg Academic Freedom Week was initiated by Humboldt-Universität in 2022 and is being held for the third time under its leadership, for the first time with the Scholars at Risk Section Berlin-Brandenburg and in collaboration with the Berlin University Alliance.
