Humboldt-Universität stands with Ukraine

Solidarity event for Ukraine on 4 March in the inner courtyard of the HU main building

We are following the events in Ukraine with great concern these days and condemn the Russian government's breach of international law. We stand firmly by the side of all Ukrainians and are in solidarity especially with our Ukrainian students and staff,“ explains Peter Frensch, Acting President of Humboldt-Universität. Since 24 February, many Humboldtians have expressed their protest against the war and organised support and help. For 4 March, the university administration invites you to a solidarity event in the courtyard of the main building, Unter den Linden 6. The event will begin at 2.30 pm.

Without freedom there is no academic freedom

“Together with other academic institutions, we organise support and scholarship programmes. But we are also exploring what help we can provide for our colleagues at our partner universities, Taras Shevchenko University in Kyiv and Ivan Franko University in Lviv. This war in the middle of Europe threatens the elementary values of our world: freedom, democracy and self-determination. This also poses an essential threat to the foundations of academic freedom and academic cooperation. We are defending ourselves against this by using all the peaceful means at our disposal. The freedom of science only works in a free world.“ On 4 March, the Presidential Board of Humboldt-Universität is asking for a clear sign against the war and the threat to its Ukrainian fellow students and colleagues.

As a sign of solidarity with Ukraine and in the awareness that academic freedom is only guaranteed on the basis of freedom, Humboldt-Universität will raise the flag of Ukraine on its main building Unter den Linden.

For reasons of infection control, all participants are requested to wear an FFP2 mask during the entire event.
