DFG Funding Atlas 2018: HU in the Top 10 again

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin continues to be one of the ten best German universities in the competition for external funding

The current funding ranking of the German Research Foundation (DFG) was presented together with the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft on 5 July 2018. The HU ranks ninth among the universities with the highest total DFG awards. The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the RWTH Aachen University hold the top three positions.

In the eight edition of the Funding Atlas, the data from universities and non-university research institutions for the period of 2014 to 2016 was evaluated. During this time, the HU received a total of 238 million euros in external funding from the DFG. This amount corresponds with an increase of 21.5 per cent compared to the DFG Funding Atlas 2015 (period of 2011 to 2013). The HU Berlin also attained ninth place at that time.

The current ranking once again shows the HU’s outstanding achievement of second place in the humanities and social sciences. A total of 72.6 million euros was raised in these research areas. In the Funding Atlas, the numerous Excellence Clusters and suprarregional networks within the humanities and social sciences also received a positive evaluation.

Researchers in the legal sciences at the HU are leading in Germany. The HU also achieved second place in the economic sciences, philosophy and literary studies, as well as in art, music, theatre and media studies.

The HU is especially attractive for renowned international guest scholars. The DFG based its figures on the locations selected most frequently by guest scholars who were funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service and the European Research Council. The HU attained second place for the second time within this context.

On the whole, Berlin is regarded as an attractive research location with the largest recruiting radius. It ranks ahead of Munich and Bonn.
